A career as a paramedic with BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) is both rewarding and challenging. While the journey requires commitment and hard work, it begins with three simple steps.

The first requirement is having a positive mental attitude. Becoming a paramedic is demanding, both academically and physically. Success depends on your willingness to study, ask questions, practice your skills, and continuously improve. A strong work ethic and the determination to overcome challenges are just as important as the medical knowledge you'll gain throughout your training.

The second step is obtaining your Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification from an approved training provider in British Columbia. The EMR program teaches the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to assess patients, manage medical and traumatic emergencies, perform CPR, use lifesaving equipment, and work effectively as part of an emergency response team.

The third requirement is obtaining a valid Class 4 driver's licence. Since paramedics are responsible for operating emergency vehicles, this licence is a mandatory requirement for employment with BCEHS.

After completing your EMR course, graduates must successfully complete the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB) licensing process. This includes passing both a written examination and a practical skills assessment to demonstrate that you meet the provincial standards required to practice as an Emergency Medical Responder in British Columbia.
